In 2011, the Penang State Government made a bold move by implementing the “No Free Plastic Bag Every Day” policy, revolutionizing habits and reducing over 33 million plastic bags since the inception of the “no plastic bag” initiative in 2009. That same year, the Penang Green Council (PGC) was established to lead the charge in sustainable development, environmental protection, and enhancing the quality of life in Penang. Since its inception, PGC has partnered with corporates, trained environmental educators, awarded outstanding environmentalists, and instilled a love for the Earth in the hearts of youth.
In 2023, after more than a decade of impactful work, PGC sought a rebrand to reflect its evolving mission and broaden its reach. That’s where Jumix stepped in.
LOGO CONCEPT
The new PGC logo combines a leaf and an Areca Nut Palm, also known as Pokok Pinang in Bahasa Melayu. By retaining the leaf element from the previous design and simplifying it into a minimal, modern version, the logo exudes a clean, sleek, and fresh vibe. This design emphasizes PGC’s commitment to a cleaner Penang, environmental awareness, sustainable development, and eco-friendly practices. The icon is simple yet memorable, with the Areca Nut Palm serving as a reminder of Penang’s own symbol, connecting the local roots with the broader mission.

BRAND COLOURS & ELEMENTS
We enhanced Penang Green Council’s signature green by deepening its tone, signifying the maturity and growth of the organization as it transitions from a local initiative to an entity with a stronger presence on the international stage. This refined green anchors the brand in sustainability and environmental leadership.
To reflect Malaysia’s vibrant multicultural landscape and emphasize that environmental responsibility transcends race, income, and geography, we introduced a complementary palette of blue, orange, and purple. These secondary colours bring warmth, diversity, and inclusivity to the brand identity, reinforcing the message that going green is a universal effort: open and accessible to all.

APPLICATIONS
Staying true to its green mission, all of PGC’s brand applications were designed with environmental friendliness and sustainability in mind. We carefully avoided the use of harmful substances and unnecessary materials, ensuring that every application adheres to the brand’s ethos. While PGC is a Government-Linked Company (GLC) in Penang, Malaysia, we aimed to elevate the brand to a global stage. Thus, all assets were crafted to be locally resonant yet globally relevant, ensuring that PGC’s message of sustainability reaches far and wide.
